Nucleation of amorphous shear bands at nanotwins in boron suboxide
The roles of grain boundaries and twin boundaries in mechanical properties are well understood for metals and alloys. However, for covalent solids, their roles in deformation response to applied stress are not established. Here we characterize the nanotwins in boron suboxide (B6O) with twin boundaries along the {0111} planes using both scanning transmission electron microscopy and quantum mecha...
متن کاملMicroscopic mechanism of shear bands in amorphous solids.
The fundamental instability responsible for the shear localization which results in shear bands in amorphous solids remains unknown despite an enormous amount of research, both experimental and theoretical. As this is the main mechanism for the failure of metallic glasses, understanding the instability is invaluable in finding how to stabilize such materials against the tendency to shear locali...
متن کاملOn the nucleation and growth of kink and shear bands.
Similarities and differences between the phenomena of kink banding in compressed layered structures and shear banding in compressed granular media are explored. Simple models are introduced for both, and the focus is directed onto how they can nucleate from the perfectly flat state. A convincing scenario is found for each in which a mode develops from an initial bifurcation into a periodic stat...
متن کاملRate-dependent shear bands in a shear-transformation-zone model of amorphous solids.
We use shear transformation zone (STZ) theory to develop a deformation map for amorphous solids as a function of the imposed shear rate and initial material preparation. The STZ formulation incorporates recent simulation results [T. K. Haxton and A. J. Liu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 195701 (2007)] showing that the steady state effective temperature is rate dependent. The resulting model predicts a w...
متن کاملFaster nucleation at lower pH: amorphous phase mediated nucleation kinetics.
Faster nucleation of hydroxyapatite (HAP) at lower pH (with lower supersaturation) contradicts classical understanding. We find that the residue calcium ion in the mother liquor is the key to trigger ACP phase transformation, which gives an understanding of nonclassical nucleation kinetics of ACP-mediated crystallization and sheds light on biomineralization.
